 AKC Retriever Field
Trials involve various categories or "stakes" in which dogs compete
against each other for ribbons and trophies. The minor stakes
include the Derby and Qualifying. The major stakes include the
Amateur and Open.
- Derby Stake - for dogs up to two
years of age. These dogs do several series of marked retrieves,
including single and/or double retrieves on land and in water.
The dogs compete for placements and corresponding Derby points.
- Qualifying Stake - testing consists
of a multiple land mark series, land blind series, water blind
series, and water mark series. The dogs compete for placements
and the Qualified All Age (QAA) designation.
- Amateur Stake – testing consists of a
multiple land mark series, land blind series, water blind series,
and water mark series. Handlers may only be amateurs – no
professionals may handle a dog in the Amateur stake. Dogs
compete for placements and corresponding points leading to the
Amateur Field Champion (AFC) title. The Amateur stake may be
limited to QAA dogs. It may also be limited to Owner/Handler
participants only.
- Open Stake - testing consists of a
multiple land mark series, land blind series, water blind series,
and water mark series. The Open is “open” to all handlers,
regardless of Professional or Amateur status. Dogs compete for
placements and corresponding points leading to the Field Champion
(FC) title (and Amateur Field Champion (AFC) title if handled by
an Amateur). The Open stake may be limited to QAA dogs.
